Statement
Ángela Solís O'Neill’s artistic practice explores drawing as a fundamental mode of thinking and knowing, extending into painting and sculpture through an embodied and process-based approach. Her work is rooted in the gesture of the hand as a cognitive and expressive tool, where drawing becomes both an intuitive act and a form of visual inquiry.
Through the transformation and deformation of everyday forms such as buildings, bicycles, and human bodies, she constructs a visual universe that moves between the figurative and the abstract. Her works evoke themes of memory, fragility, and identity, suggesting that images are not merely representations of reality but traces of lived experience. A restrained, often monochromatic palette and a strong emphasis on line over colour allow the stroke to function as a primary carrier of meaning, revealing emotional and perceptual tensions within the image.
Solís O'Neill’s practice is informed by an interest in phenomenology, visual perception, and the cognitive dimensions of drawing. Influenced by theories of perception and the idea of the “thinking hand,” her work reflects on how bodily gesture, intuition, and visual memory shape the way we construct images and understand the world. Childhood imagery and naïve forms appear not as stylistic references, but as cognitive models that challenge conventional hierarchies of visual correctness and representation.
Her work has been exhibited in galleries and artistic spaces including the Chamber of Commerce of Seville, the New York Academy of Arts (NYC), the Antiquarium Museum of Seville, Espacio Mondo (Seville) and PADA Gallery (Lisbon), among others. She has also participated in conferences at institutions such as Escuela SUR at the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid), and has been awarded in art competitions by Acciona, Sabadell, CNAL and Emilio Ollero. Upcoming exhibitions include a solo exhibition at Haurie Gallery (Seville, 2026).
Through her artistic production, Solís O'Neill reflects on drawing as a territory of knowledge, memory, and identity, using the act of making as a way to explore how images emerge from bodily experience and emotional perception.
